University of Dschang - Faculty of Agricultural Sciences (FASA)

FASA is present in the 5 agro-ecological zones of Cameroon, a minature reflection of Afrique. Its three principal objectives are education, research and extension.

Project collaborators

Felix Meutchieye (co-principal investigator), Lecturer, University of Dschang, Dept. of Animal Science, Dschang, Cameroon
Mr. Meutchieye lectures courses in Animal Breeding and Production Systems, Applications of GIS in Animal Science, Small ruminants husbandry, Practical classes in Animal husbandry and co-supervises BSC students’ research projects. He has been collaborating with the Committee on Genetic Nomenclature of Sheep and Goats (COGNOSAG) since 2005 to establish primarity indices (to assess the type of genetic population, related to diversity and based on morphometrics) of the small ruminant population in sub Saharan Africa. He has also coordinated projects on natural resources management in Cameroon. He will coordinate the Cameroon team activities and manage information flow with other contributors. Locally, he will also lead aspects related to molecular characterization of cavies in conjunction with Dr. Djikeng from BecA and Dr. Mwai from ILRI.

Aziwo Tatanja Niba, Senior Lecturer, Dept. of Animal Production, University of Dschang, Dschang, Cameroon
Dr. Niba is a Senior Lecturer for Farm Animal Physiology and Biotechnology at the Department of Animal Science, Faculty of Agronomy and Agricultural Sciences, University of Dschang. He has undertaken several research projects and published papers on cavies in Cameroon. His present research interest in this area is on: factors affecting reproduction/preweaning growth and survival of cavies; influence of nutrition on reproduction/production performances of cavies. He is coordinator of the postgraduate programme of the department of Animal Science. He teaches courses on Non Conventional livestock production, Small Ruminant husbandry, Molecular Biology and Research Methodology and Professional Practice. He will lead the aspects related to interactions between nutrition improved management, and reproduction/production performance in conjunction with Dr. Maass from CIAT, and Dr. Fon and Mr. Meutchieye.

Dorothy Engwali Fon, Senior Lecturer, Dept. of Agric Economics, University of Dschang, Dschang, Cameroon
Dr. Fon is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Agricultural Economics of the Faculty of Agronomy and Agricultural Sciences, University of Dschang. She teaches production economics; Farm Management and accounts; Project Analysis; Methodology of farming systems research in the tropics and professional practice. Her research interest areas involve economics of farm businesses, gender and agricultural issues, environmental management, community development and policy issues. She will lead the socioeconomic and technical aspects of this project in conjunction with Prof. Chiuri from ILRI, Dr. Niba and Mr. Meutchieye.

Manjeli Yacouba, Professor, Dean of Faculty of Agronomy and Agricultural Sciences, and Head of Department of Animal Science, University of Dschang, Dschang, Cameroon
Prof. Manjeli is Professor at the Department of Animal Science and Head of the same department. He holds a PhD in animal breeding and has published numerous papers on production systems, genetic resources and animal improvement. He teaches genetics, animal breeding, beef husbandry, cytogenetics and biostatistics. He supervises BSc, MSc and PhD students’ projects. He will supervise the dimensions related to production systems and genetic diversity assessment in cavies.
